The First Ulcinj International Music Festival

 The Ulcinj International Music Festival makes its debut from Friday, September 9 to Sunday, September 11, 2016 at various locations in the scenic coastal town of Ulcinj. It will showcase the talents of outstanding Balkan musicians as well as internationally renowned artists from around the world. This year, the festival will feature Montenegrin artists: Gjylie Pelingu, soprano and Iliriana Gjoni, pianist, Serbian pianist, Natasa Mitrovic, pianist and the New York-based music group, Poetica Musica including Oren Fader, guitarist, Barry Crawford, flautist, and Eleanor Valkenburg, soprano. They will perform works by Debussy, Tchaikovsky, Bogdanovic, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Gershwin and songs and piano pieces by Albanian composers, Tonin Harapi and Zef Cobaj.

The romantic and beautiful city of Ulcinj with its pristine beaches and historic hilltop Castle district provides the perfect backdrop for the Ulcinj International Festival. Gifted young musicians and seasoned professionals from all over the Balkans and beyond have the possibility to interact and combine their talents sharing their music with local citizens and with tourists from all over the world.


The festival is supported by the Albanian-American Cultural Foundation New York and co-organized by the Palata Venezia Hotel and the Hotel Mediteran and in cooperation with the Ulcinj Music School, and the Municipality of Ulcinj. All concerts are free to the public.

Iliriana Gjoni, pianist, is a native of Ulcinj and one of the first alumni of music school in Ulcinj. She has won many international prizes including first prize at Montenegro’s Young Musician’s Competition, and won first prize in the National Competition of Guardiagele in Italy. She recently attained her Master of Music in piano and chamber music at the University of Karlsruhehe.

She now divides her time between teaching duties in Karlsruhe and Munich and is an active performer.


 Gyilie Pelingu, soprano is a graduate of the Music Conservatory in Tirana, Albania and has won first prize in the Republican Competition in Montenegro and first prize in the Ars Kosovo Competition in Pristina, Kosovo. She has performed the Balkans including Albania, Slovenia, Austria, Kosovo and Montenegro. She currently teaches at the music school in Ulcinj.


Natasa Mitrovic, pianist, was the youngest pianist ever to be appointed piano professor at the Music Conservatory in Belgrade. She received a Fulbright Grant and studied at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She has performed in Kuwait, the United States, China, Japan, France and Germany as well as the Balkans and continues to be active and respected teacher at the conservatory.


The Poetica Musica Trio is a New York-based chamber music ensemble who has traveled to more than 60 countries including Peru, Jamaica, Norway, Denmark, Turkey, Jordan, India and Israel. They have performed at some of the most prestigious music festivals including the Istanbul International Music Festival, The Bergen International Music Festival in Norway, and the Sarajevo Festival. This season they will tour Kosovo, Bulgaria, Greece and South Africa.
