Active Sports & Recreation in Montenegro's South Coast
The Hotel Mediteran Ulcinj is an exciting "base camp" for sports and active recreation activities in the Ulcinj South Coast region, and throughout Montenegro. Montenegro is one of those unusual settings, where through much of the year, a traveler can be on a warm, sunny beach in the afternoon, and skiing some of Europes finest new ski slopes the next morning. And most activitie can be pursued inexpensively, if not on the cheap. All of the activities described here can be arranged with Hotel Mediteran Ulcinj, either in advance of a holiday visit, or during your vacation stay in the region.
Kitesurfing, Wind Surfing and Hang Gliding - The beaches of Ada Bojana and Velika Plaza, in the Ulcinj South Coast, are among the finest places in the world for kite surfing. This due to the friendly prevailing wind conditions, and the miles of undeveloped beaches over which to float and land safely.
Scuba Diving - Ulcinj's 2,000 years as a key port in the Adriatic coastal region of the Mediterranean, has resulted in numerous shipwrecks off the Ulcinj coast. Even an ancient civilization lies buried beneath the sea just offshore, having been toppled long ago by a massive earthquake.
Fishing - The Ulcinj South Coast offers a rich diversity of fishing for the enthusiast looking for an entire fishing vacation experience, or those interested simply in a day's excursion. Deep sea fishing of the Ulcinj coast is popular, as is fishing along the region's river (Ada Bojana area) and water bodies (particularly the Lake Skadar area).
Rock and Mountain Climbing, Canyoning, Abseiling - Superb climbing opportunities are available at Montenegro's pristine national parks, as well as interesting rockface challenges in the country's coastal mountain ranges. Climbs can be pursued at beginner to the most advanced levels.
Sailing - Many natives of the Ulcinj South Coast region are natural sailors, descendants of generations of conquering sailing nations and pirates that have frequented the region. A major port facility is located in the coastal community of Bar just north of Ulcinj, providing an array of rental and crew support.
Water and Jet Skiing, Power Boating - The relatively uncrowded waters of Ulcinj South Coast are a popular place for jet skiiers and water skiiers. The relatively calm coast waters allow jet skiiers to allow jet skiis as a mode of transportation between coastal communities such as Ulcinj and Ada Bojana.
Snow Skiing - In Montenegro, winter resorts such as Kolasin and Zabljak offer both downhill and cross-country skiing, from beginning to expert skill levels. The resorts situated at the foot of Bjelasica and Durmitor massifs are convenient overnight excursions from the Ulcinj South Coast.
Beach Soccer and Beach Volleyball - There is an undeniable beach culture in the Ulcinj South Coast, and beach volleyball and beach soccer are as popular here as elsewhere in the world. Casual play is always possible during any visit, but also check ahead of each visit for tournaments and televised play that may be scheduled.
Photography Vacations - Montenegro is a popular destination for photographers seeking to capture a unique sense of place, time, and circumstance. Setting as varied as mountaintop vistas, shimmering beaches, olive groves, historic towns and villages, and a fascinating local population, make for an interesting journey of images.
Walking, Hiking, and Trail Running - Montenegro's 6,000 km "Coastal Mountain Transversal Route" is a trail network situated in part in the Ulcinj South Coast, allowing walking, hiking, and trail running - on long undeveloped sandy beaches, rocky shorelines, river and lake shores, and in foothills and mountain areas.
Mountain Biking - The new trail network will allow access to still unexplored natural areas in Montenegro's South Coast. The trails start in the coastal mountains north of the Bay of Kotor, through Lovcen, south to Rumija. Sweeping views, rare Mediterranean plants, as well as historical caravan routes, and old fortifications featured.
Whitewater Rafting - Rafting along the dramatic Tara River Gorge - Europe's deepest gorge at 1,300 meters - passing near waterfalls, under bridges, near old Roman roads, and of course, through rougher "white waters." One popular route follows an 18 km course starting from Brstnovica, that takes approximately three hours.
Other Active Recreation - For the active recreation and sporting enthusiast, there is literally no limit to what can be done in the Ulcinj South Coast and most activities are relatively inexpensive, if not cheap, for the enthusiast. In addition to the above popular activities, such pursuits as Jeep Tours, Cave Exploration, Kayaking, Mountaineering, Obstacle Courses, Surfing, and Outdoor Survival Courses, can be arranged.
